yes ladies and gents, it is that time of day once more: blogtime!
another day in the can. well, not really, but i don’t have any ambitious plans for productivity in the near term. my cube-neigbor, Anny, just forced me to eat another chocolate chip cookie. MAN! that was good. but I am desperately trying to save room in my poor little belly (i use that term figuratively) for a special dinner tonight: Rachel and I are going to the famous San Francisco landmark ‘House of Prime Rib’. You can tell, I assume, what their specialty is there. The dinner is in honor of her passing the Broker’s exam - it is an important milestone for her and a great excuse to eat at this restaurant.
As I was reading Neuromancer (finished it last night) it occurred to me that many of the ideas and paradigms introduced by Gibson set the table for The Matrix. ALthough you already knew that, for those of us who have never read Gibson’s work, it was an enlightening read: in many ways, it serves as an effective ‘prequel’ to the 90’s special effects action sci-fi classic. The concepts and explainations of artificial intelligence, ‘the construct’ and, most of all, ‘the matrix’ itself are so richly presented and convincingly created that, having read this book, I am more convinced of the movie world of Morpheus and Neo. Was it Wintermute himself that created the ‘real’ world hidden by the Matrix in the Matrix? Are Molly and Case ultimately to blame for the enslavement of an entire race? Gibson’s genius in creating a new ‘God’ can hardly be overstated, and I am thrilled to finally have read this book. You are a smart one, Xis - thanks for sharing your ideas with me. I would likely never have read this book if not for you. And to think you read it as a teenager - even younger perhaps?
Cousin Rob sent an article by email today. In it, the author makes some incendiary claims regarding the ‘Zionists‘ who ‘control America’ and bomb our country and citizens in order to feed the military-industrial complex that they own in the name of profits. Perhaps it is a logical sequence, but I am not sure that propogating this mindset will accomplish anything … I am having a hard time knowing how to respond.
