Over seventy years ago, British diplomat Lord Arthur Ponsonby (1871-1946) wrote about “the perennial propaganda claims of wartime leaders”.

The principles proclaimed by war mongers are as follows:

1. We do not want war.

2. The other side is solely responsible for war.

3. The enemy has the face of the devil… axis of evil

4. It is a noble cause that we defend and not particular interest

5. The enemy commits atrocities knowingly; if we make unformtunate mistakes, it is involuntary

6. The enemy uses unauthorised weapons

7. We suffer very fe wlosses, while the losses of the nemy are enormous

8. Artists and intelllectuals support our cause

9. Our cause has a sacred nature

10. Those who question our statemenst are traitors.

I think a good argument can be made that the current (unelected) administration has used at least 7 of these to defend the attack of Iraq. We shall see when they get around to the other 3.
