A Hammer Fell from the Sky
Yesterday tragedy struck CasaWeX at around 12:30 p.m. when a hammer fell from the sky. Wadini & I spent yesterday attending a demonstration by People for Trees. We enrolled in the program earlier this year and agreed to attend the demonstration for our three free trees (two crepe myrtle & a chinese flame tree). They actually got us to "volunteer" and we planted two bradford pear trees on monroe st & 51st. We went to Mom and Dad’s and read the paper while Dad made us some eggs and toast. We visited for a while and since we had a lot planned, we hightailed it home around 11:45.
We got home and started working on planting our own trees. The planting of these 5 gallon, eight-feet-tall trees goes rather quickly once you know what you’re doing. So we proceeded with the planting. Now at the demonstration they use this weird 35-lb. piece of metal to sink the stakes that are about 9 inches in circumference and about 8 feet long. We didn’t have the weird piece of metal, so we used a hammer - not a high-tech metal hammer, but a wooden handled five-lb. junky thing that’s been laying around for years.
Wadini jumped up on a ladder and proceeded to start pounding the stake into the ground while I held it. The top of the stake started splintering and wood chips were flying. I heard a metal clang and looked up and something heavy walloped me in the face. I actually didn’t feel much pain. Then with my hands to my mouth I looked up at Wadini and he said, "You’re bleeding!".
There was blood all over my hands. We came inside, grabbed paper towels, doused them in water, and tried to wipe away some of the blood to see how much damage had been wrought by Thor. Once I looked in the mirror, my first thought was of your painful accident on the escalator at Neiman Marcus in SF. I was afraid to look too much more because I was starting to panic even though I wasn’t feeling much pain.
We finally made it up to the emergency room and about 40 minutes after we walked in I was laying prone on a gurney while Dr. Deitch stitched my face back together.
This is what it looks like:
