Yargh!
AS IF you havent noticed, I STILL have NOT ftpd the pics from Nueva York. I could give you all the “excuses” but I wont (or maybe I will but not so much as an “excuse”, but more as a revelatory thesis. The computra has not felt so interesting to me since Ive been back. The “internet” while somewhat fun is too static & lacks texture to my hungry eyes and thirsty ears. We have been walking a lot since weve been back. It seems more natural and necessary than ever before.
On Wednesday I was choking from being inside so long. At 3:30 I left work and started walking. I walked all the way to 4th & University before I decided that if I waked too much further I would have to take a cab back in order to be back before my break was over. In New York we witnessed the Pedestrian as King of the Road and we liked it a lot.
Thursday & Friday were full of work and catching up that post-vacation running to catch up, going thru the mail, making sure the bills have been paid in your absence, collecting the receipts, returning the luggage to its dusty storage, picking up the dust, stowing the mementos of the non-digital persuasion.
On Friday we had a Kosen Rufu (World Peace) Meeting. Wade gave an experience, Nick &Ed MCd (that Nick has uncanny understanding of the nuances of speech and is a quick study) then we went out for a little mordita with Mermaw at Osaka, our local sushi house. We stayed up late picking through the mess of CasaWex, eventually tossing off to bed after watching Laurel Canyon into the wee hours of the morning.
Saturday morning was s l o w. We slept until noon. You know one of those mornings where you wake up a few times and check the clock, but then your internal monologue interjects with a few eleoquent “Not YET!”s. Before you know it, it’s noon and then you really have to get up or else you’ve slept the day away. We walked over to a little video store by Hoover High and then returned home to drop the dogs off (they were panting). We walked on to Ponces’ for brunch (bean burrito, carne asada enchilada, side of rice, and guacamole as well as a few bebidas). Then we continued on our journey. I thought we another movie to return at Ken Video, but it turns out I was misinformed (or jumped to an incorrect conclusion) and the movie had to go back to Strictly Video (contrary to its name they do carry DVDs) which is over by Jhoti Bihanga (34th). On the way home we discovered a GREAT book store. Spread out over two levels, the store uses a residential space for a portion of the store and it works out great. The vibe was nice and prices even better. This walk was long! We left at two and did not get home until six.
Saturday evening was very very quiet. — (What does it mean when you take some cold medicine with decongestants and then a few hours later your ears are so stuffed up that you can’t hear?) — We watched this movie that I think you would like called “Better Luck Tomorrow”. It kind of has a Pulp Fiction flavor, but the protagonists are high school students. It worked very well, altho watch out - there are a few scenes with startling brutality.
Sunday started slowly for me, but Wade was out the door and gone by 6:30 am as he had to work. I stayed in bed and read for a few hours til I knew that Wade would be home soon. I jumped up and started working like dervish, cleaning the kitchen, dusting, organizing the maelstrom left in the aftermath of the NY week, watering plants, making the bed, etc. Wade walked in with take away from PF Chang’s (I love their spicy chicken) and we sat down to eat and proceeded to just let some of the day flow by like water through a stream.
It can be very distracting to be with someone. On the one hand you love spending time with them, but sometimes you just want to be able to let the day meander without having to explain to someone why you need to spend the day in that way. Relationships are full of compromise even if there isn’t huge discussion about what, how, or why you will do what you do. On occasion it is a relief to spend time with yourself doing whatever. NY was kind of intense for me because I spent almost every moment with someone(s). My usual schedule gives me lots of open ended time to do what with as I wish. I “waste” lots of time, reading books, surfing and reading on the web, daydreaming, imagining what I want to do to the house, sleeping, getting ready (usu. for work), rubbing the dogs, and napping. I am not as driven as you or as focused as Wade. I have a had to take a little bit of time doing my thing - so to speak.
On Sunday while Wade was out and I was cleaning I was having this majorly weird little imaginatory moment. For some reason I was fixated on the idea of What If Wade did not come home until very late and then we would have to split up. I was locked in imagining this alternate world. On the one hand I was pained imagining that he didn’t come home, yet I was enthralled by the narrative thread that it wove in my mind. It was odd. Later after Wade was home I told him about this, he just laughed and hugged me.
Eventually we roused ourselves and guess what? We went on another walk to the video store by Jhoti Bihoti with the dogs. They were both very good and barked and growled very little at the passing strangers.
Life has been pretty good. Two of our very good friends just had their first child, a little girl, so hopefully we will get to meet her this week. W’uchi and I have been getting back to our normally scheduled routine and feeling good ’bout where we are together, but maybe looking for a little more adventure (like more traveling — not to hint at anything else :). I have an inaugural book club meeting tomorrow night — but I just started reading the book! Shhhhhhhhh! and so the fotos will have to wait a few more days…
