Preaching to the Choir, or Stuff of Substance
Since sometime in the fourth quarter of last year, I have largely avoided any political references, commentary, links, and such on this here blog. Mainly I stopped because my partner in blog, xtina, commanded the cesation of such ranting, due, i think, to the fact that there are so many excellent other sources for that discourse. And though I didn’t (and don’t) disagree with that point, it has had other, unintended consequences. (God, I love using commas!)
The most obvious consequence, clearly, has been the severe curtailment of any comments from yours truly. Let me explain why: I expend waaaaaaayy too much of my mental capacity reading, thinking, or talking about our pathetic President, his cronies, and the irreparable damage they have wrought in the name of this great nation. So with the cease-and-desist command having been issued from on high, I’ve had less to say.
This is not a complaint, for what it has done is forced me think of other topics of substance worthy of entries. Clearly I’ve struggled with that to a degree (a quick examination of my lack of posts since ‘the decree’ illustrates this point). Also, I’m not really the type of blogger who revels in revealing the mind-numbing detail or minutae that many non-issue-specific bloggers bore you with. With those limitations in mind, I either post something of substance - or I don’t post. Deal with it.
That said, one behavior my semi-self-imposed cesation of political comment has influenced is that I now share my insights and leftist political trivia mainly with a (very) small circle of like-minded individuals - either verbally or via email. Preaching to the Choir, is what it is. I don’t feel bad or guilty about it, just a bit hollow. There is so much acrimony, conflict, and general antipathy in the world of ideas, it seems a crime to not make my excellent ones more widely available.
But in the end, I do feel that xtina’s idea was right: the world today is overflowing with political punditry, partisan sniping, name-calling, and general complaints. The duologue is part of the world, sure, but why can’t it be a place for something different: funny stories, nifty links, open hearts, and random thouhts. No preaching. No choir. Just stuff. Stuff of substance.
