Camping @ Sinkyone
In honor of la familia’s current camping expedition, I’ve decided to publish a journal entry of mine from March 17, 2003, when the WeXachos and I went camping at Sinkyone Beach. …
Sinkyone Beach, 3/17/03
The night was bitterly cold, punctuated by the incessant cacaphony of amphibious mating calls. Frogs appear to be nocturnal animals, near as I can tell. Despite my trusty ear plugs, I was treated to an all-night concert, instead of the lullaby I was hoping for.
But in the end, I found some rejuvenating rest. I awoke in my tent with my small dog cuddled inside my sleeping bag, the sun’s rays having begun to warm the chilly spring air. Unzipping the exit flap, I noticed a distant plume of smoke - perhaps 3/4 miles away - sign of another group of campers.

We’d left North Beach Sunday afternoon, just an hour after our intended time of departure. At 1:30 PM, Wade turned the Rodeo west onto Bay St., an our camping adventure was begun. The weather was fair, but with Predictions of Rain, we were anxious.
North over the Golden Gate and towards Santa Rosa we travelled. Being bedevilled by some allergies all day, I’d take several allergy pills, and their drowsy after-effects kicked in. I napped most of the drive, awakening only for supply stops at Costco and Safeway, until we reached Hwy 1, west of 101 near Legget. By then, the sun had drifted quite low in the sky and we knew our time to make camp was growing short.
With Christina at the wheel, I sat in the back seat with Moula and two boxes of firewood.
