Best Crappy Film of the Year

I haven’t seen Crash, the Oscar winner for best picture. Depending on the source, I have heard it mildly praised, panned, and described as ‘worth watching’. No one - not a single person - said that the movie was ‘great’, or anything approaching that. My mom, in particular, felt that it was narrow minded, insulting, and did nothing to advance the cause of racial harmony. No frontin’ offered up a particularly scathing take on the film, along with a bizarre plot recap from Ebert that makes the film sound like complete crap. Still, it did win ‘best picture’, right? But then, I read No Frontin’s recap of the last ten Oscar winners for best picture, and based on their pathetic record, I’ve decided that I have absolutley no interest in seeing Crash. Look at this record (w/ NF’s take on the film):

  • Million Dollar Baby (okay)
  • Return Of The King (good)
  • Chicago (horrible)
  • A Beautiful Mind (bad)
  • Gladiator (okay)
  • American Beauty (okay)
  • Shakespeare In Love (no fucking clue, probably horrible)
  • Titanic (no fucking clue, probably horrible)
  • The English Patient (no fucking clue, probably horrible)
  • Braveheart (okay)

I agree with all his comments, except Shakespear in love (good film), The English Patient (awful) and Titanic (great film). Seriously, I am baffled that a group supposedly bent on honoring the best work of film would pick works like Gladiator or Chicago to take the most prestigious award of the year. But then, what do I know, I’m just a blogger.

Yah, I also found his analysis of Crash quite amusing, altho worrisome cos some people I enjoy hanging out with liked it. For the record I have not seen the movie in question, but once I read a little about it and heard mom’s and dad’s reactions to it I had little interest in changing that.

I was subjected to many brokeback jokes in the mountains of utah ala he doth protest too much & i got seriously sick off them. It seems to me that these fellows who are so intent upon proving their manhood by homophobic jokes, big suvs and motorized sports are merely proving something else.
