Immigration, Anger, and Reality

I have not staked out a position on the current immigration brouhaha - I see both value and costs to our unregulated borders north and south. But, unlike many angry xenophobes, I am not looking at things from a place a fear, but from a place of humanity and reality. Who washes my dishes and cooks my food when I eat out? Most of the time, illegal immigrants do. Who changes cleans my room and puts clean towels and sheets in my hotel room? Most of the time, illegal immigrants do. Who picks the organic vegetables I buy at Whole Foods? You get the idea.

But that does not stop the vitriolic shills from blaming America’s woes on these undercompensated masses for poor schools and potholed streets. The reality is that immigrants (legal & not) contribute a lot more to our society than we care to notice. As La Queen Sucia explains to one demented emailer…

The first soldier
to die for the United States
in the current war in Iraq
was Marine Lance Cpl. Jose
Gutierrez, an illegal immigrant
from Guatemala.

He died for you.
