80’s rulez
On my way home today I dipped into American Rag, an odd mix of ridiculously overpriced new clothes and decently priced, nice used clothes. Even though the prices are a bit much, the selection of styles is pretty cool.
So there I was shuffling through the shirt racks (I bought a vintage polo) when I stumble upon some pretty cool sweatshirts and Ts. Then I realize that they are ‘Stussy’ brand (all brand new), with the logo prominently scripted on each and every item - although subtly in some cases - a phenomenon I want no part of. Fine. Then, as I continue along the rack (there was a whole rack for Stussy) I start seeing these designs that are straight out of 1990. I mean identical. I mean actually the very same screen prints from my junior year in high school.
And I realized that that time period is now being regurgitated and fetishized into ironic fashion. They had the slip-on Vans, the Stussy Ts, and the Izod polos. Later I saw the clerks there unpacking some fugly-ass sunglasses that overemphasize the hideous aspects of 80s shades. And thus the circle of fashion life continues: crappy old styles reissued and converted into clever reincarnations at outrageously inflated prices. Yeah, the 80z rule.
